How can I build a website using WordPress?

I am trying to build a website for my arts company. I have had somebody do the design, and I need to build it using WordPress, which I have already installed in my web host. Should I use a customisable template? Is there a template that is truly customisable that you could recommend? I am not that familiar with HTML but I would be willing to learn... I just don't know where to go from here.
